Korngold was natural within an assimilated Jewish home in Brno, Austria-Hungary (now Czech Republic), the boy of the music critic Julius Korngold, and deliberate music under Alexander von Zemlinsky and Robert Fuchs. Gustav Mahler, upon meeting the immature Erich, known as him the "musical genius."
